Its main use is in polyvinyl alcohol and polyvinyl acetate resin production. Polyvinyl acetate resins are produced as both homopolymer and copolymer and used for making emulsion products. Polyvinyl alcohol, is used for its film forming and adhesive properties in addition to use as a polymerization aid in vinyl chloride polymerizations. Other end uses include ethylene vinyl acetate a copolymer which is the third biggest consumer of VAM, vinyl acetate ethylene, polyvinyl butryral, ethylene vinyl alcohol, polyvinyl formal and chloride vinyl acetate copolymer.
Total demand is expected to reach 19 million tons by 2020, supported by strong demand throughout Asia and emerging economics. Significant capacity is expected to be added over the next 10 years, the majority of developments within Asia. Vinyl Acetate Monomer is the second largest consumption market of ethylene after polyethylene. Approximately 75 percent of it is converted to ethylene glycol.
