Cumene (isopropylbenzene) is produced by the catalytic alkylation of benzene using propylene. A small proportion of cumene is used to produce propylene oxide while the majority is used to produce phenol. Phenol itself is used to make bisphenol A, also known as BPA (which has received an unwanted reputation in recent years) and phenolic resins.
BPA is used in the conventional production of polycarbonate and epoxy resins driven by the electrical, construction and automotive industries. The polycarbonate industry has suffered a number of hits in recent years, first the arrival of digital media saw sales of CDs and DVDs shrinking and the bad press of BPA used in baby goods and foodstuffs in general saw another blow to its use, particularly in North America and Europe.
The phenolic resins are typically used as binders in wood based products, this demand sector being closely liked to the construction industry. Phenol is also consumed in production of caprolactam, adipic acid, salicylic acid, disinfectant and other small uses.
